Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland hosted several North East councils for an event with the National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO) in Port Melbourne this week and a bid to stop the carnage on the roads.
NTRO take an innovative approach to road maintenance and road safety, with the ability to provide insights into the technological advancements and environmental initiatives driving road standards.
“It was inspiring to see so many councils join our meeting with the NTRO, where we discussed their innovative and technology-based approaches to improving road safety,” Ms Cleeland said.
“We learnt about more sustainable and modern measures and testing approaches that can deliver both safer and more suitable approaches for the region.
Ms Cleeland said the Allan Labor Government continued to demonstrate a lack of care for the state’s road network, particularly those in regional Victoria, accepting poor road standards that are generations behind other states.
“We have unfortunately seen this State Government neglect our roads, with funding for road maintenance decreasing from over $700 million to just $441.6 million in the last year alone, on top of $230 million being cut from road safety programs in the past two years,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Labor has developed a culture that squashes innovation and investment and it is impacting the safety and lives of road users.
“While the Allan Labor Government keeps ignoring the problem, we need to rethink how we tackle road safety issues and the NTRO and our local councils can certainly help in this area.”
