Seymour will host a public hearing as part of the Inquiry into the 2022 Flood Event following calls from The Nationals Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland.
The Inquiry into the 2022 Flood Event hearing is scheduled to take place in Seymour on September 14, with more information about the venue to be announced soon.
Expressing her gratitude for the community’s efforts, Ms Cleeland said the Legislative Council’s Environment and Planning Committee holding the inquiry needed to understand the challenges facing Seymour’s recovery.
“A public hearing is a massive win for the Seymour community who have been pushing hard for this since the committee’s establishment,” Ms Cleeland said.
“This is an opportunity to have our voices heard and give our region the best chance possible at having local recommendations included in the final report.”
Ms Cleeland emphasized the importance of understanding the challenges faced by Seymour in its recovery from the flood event, and the need for reforms in warning systems, response, and mitigation measures.
“Together, we can work towards meaningful changes and better preparedness for future flood events,” she said.
Ms Cleeland urged all those impacted by the October floods to make submissions to the inquiry before the deadline next month.
“With a local hearing and this submission process, we need the committee to understand the unique challenges along the Goulburn River,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Clearly, adequate warning was not provided to the community, and the response on the ground in the immediate aftermath was not well directed by the Victorian Government.
“I will keep the community updated in the lead up to the public hearing and make sure our strong town is heard.”
