Families in Seymour and surrounding communities are being denied the quality local childcare services they deserve as the Allan Labor Government abandons a key election promise.
In November 2022, the Labor Government committed $584 million to deliver 50 childcare services – including in Seymour – with a promise all of the new facilities would be “up and running” by 2028.
This week in Parliament when directly asked if the Seymour Childcare Centre would be open by 2028, Minister for Children, Lizzie Blandthorn, failed to guarantee this commitment would be met.
Labor’s failure to stand by its commitment follows revelations that dozens of promised school upgrades have stalled, whilst 29 others remain unfunded, as Victoria’s net debt heads towards a record $187.3 billion by 2027-28.
The Nationals’ Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, said the broken promises showed how little Labor cares about regional families.
“Seymour and surrounding communities deserve better than a government that abandons its commitments and denies local families affordable and accessible childcare options,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage childcare and Victorian families are paying the price.”
Shadow Minister for Education, Jess Wilson, said: “Whether schools or childcare facilities, Labor is walking away for its commitments and leaving Victorian families without the education and care options they deserve.
“The Allan Labor Government’s abandonment of this project casts doubt over the future of all 50 promised childcare facilities across the state.”
