$3 million to back Seymour’s racing future
Seymour’s racing industry will receive a major boost under a Liberal and Nationals Government, with a $3 million commitment towards the first stage redevelopment of Seymour Racing Club as a regional training hub.
The investment, will support the continued growth of racing in Seymour and the local businesses, workers and families who rely on the industry.
The Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland MP said racing was an important part of Seymour’s economy and a major contributor to the broader Mitchell Shire.
“Racing is one of Seymour’s great industries. It supports trainers, stable staff, farriers, vets, feed suppliers, tradies and a whole network of local businesses,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Recent economic data shows just how significant that industry is, with thoroughbred and harness racing contributing $94.9 million to the Mitchell Shire economy and supporting 752 full-time equivalent jobs.
“That is a lot more than what happens on race day. It is money flowing through local businesses, families earning an income and visitors spending money in our towns.”
The data also found racing generated $53.7 million in household income across Mitchell Shire, with 53 race meetings attracting almost 29,000 attendances during the reporting period.
Ms Cleeland said investment in Seymour Racing Club was about backing an industry that was already making a substantial contribution to the region while creating an opportunity for it to grow further.
“People in Seymour know the value of racing. What we need is the infrastructure to match the importance of the industry to our region,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Building Seymour Racing Club into a regional training hub will help attract more participants, support more local jobs and strengthen the businesses that rely on racing.
“This is exactly the sort of regional investment that the Fair Share Guarantee is designed to deliver.”
Shadow Minister for Racing Tim McCurdy said racing is a major contributor to Seymour’s local economy, supporting hundreds of jobs and providing important flow-on benefits for businesses and families across the region.
“Seymour should not have to compete with Melbourne for every dollar of infrastructure investment,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Regional Victoria deserves its fair share, and this $3 million commitment is about backing Seymour’s racing industry, supporting local jobs and investing in the future of this community.”
