The Nationals’ Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, says the Allan Labor Government is leaving regional Agricultural Shows out in the cold, as grant funding has stagnated and failed to keep pace with rising costs.
Despite skyrocketing inflation and increasing expenses, the Agriculture and Pastoral Society Grants Program has remained capped at just $300,000 statewide, with a maximum of $10,000 per show.
“In real terms, this funding is going backwards,” Ms Cleeland said.
“It’s staggering to think there’s less funding available now than in 2005, when the total was $320,000. That’s 20 years of cost increases – for insurance, equipment, and infrastructure – with no meaningful boost in support.”
Local societies including the Euroa Agricultural Society and Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society have benefited from the program in the past, but Ms Cleeland said the grants are no longer enough to meet the needs of these volunteer-run events.
“These shows are the lifeblood of our communities. They connect us with our farming roots, support local economies, and bring people together from all walks of life,” Ms Cleeland said.
“People spend months preparing cakes, crafts and livestock in the hope of winning a ribbon. Kids learn about where their food comes from, and local towns come alive.”
Ms Cleeland said Labor had failed to understand or respect the value of these shows.
“Our Ag Societies aren’t asking for the world. They’re asking for help to keep facilities safe, gates open, and traditions alive. Instead, they’re being asked to do more with less,” Ms Cleeland said.
“The Liberals and Nationals fought to keep this funding going through COVID, but it’s clear the Allan Labor Government sees it as a token gesture rather than a real investment in regional Victoria.”
Applications for the current round of funding close 12 September 2025, but Ms Cleeland is calling on the Government to urgently increase the pool of available funding.
“Our Agricultural Societies deserve better than frozen funding and lip service,” Ms Cleeland said.
“They deserve the backing to keep our local shows strong for generations to come.”
