The Nationals’ Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, has praised the next generation of leaders following a recent visit to Rushworth P-12 College, where she recently joined students for a civics and leadership class.
During the visit, Ms Cleeland spoke with students about the importance of civic engagement, the responsibilities of Members of Parliament, and how leadership begins in the classroom and community.
“Getting to join school classes around the electorate is always a highlight for me,” Ms Cleeland said.
“It’s energising to see the enthusiasm and curiosity students bring to conversations about leadership and politics.”
The session explored how young people can use their voices to advocate for themselves, their peers, and their communities.
“These leadership classes are teaching students something incredibly valuable: that their voice matters,” Ms Cleeland said.
“It’s not just about politics – it’s about confidence, communication, and having the courage to speak up for what you believe in.”
Ms Cleeland said the visit was also a chance to offer insight into the day-to-day life of a regional MP and the role elected representatives play in shaping legislation and advocating for their communities.
“We spoke about what being an MP involves, what our responsibilities are, and the kind of change we’re trying to deliver for our region,” Ms Cleeland said.
“It’s also an opportunity to flip the script, to ask students what matters to them, how they define leadership, and what changes they want to see in their schools and communities.
“These conversations are always meaningful and fun.”
Ms Cleeland commended the staff at Rushworth P-12 College for fostering a space where students are encouraged to think critically, lead with empathy, and develop a strong sense of civic pride.
“These students are thoughtful, articulate, and full of potential,” Ms Cleeland said.
“It’s clear that programs like these are helping to build a generation of engaged, informed, and confident young leaders.”
