The Nationals’ Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, is advocating for vital upgrades to the intersection of Bank Street and Saleyard Road in Avenel, a critical step towards improving safety, traffic flow, and access around the town’s train station.
Ms Cleeland has called for the transfer of VicTrack-owned land to Strathbogie Shire Council – an essential move to unlock long-overdue improvements in the area.
“This intersection has long been a safety concern for locals and visitors alike – it’s simply not fit for a growing community,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Transferring this parcel of VicTrack land is a practical first step to enable intersection upgrades, the creation of proper train station parking, and safe access for people with disabilities.”
As things stand, the area surrounding the station has no paved footpath and no designated crossing area.
To reinforce the case for action, Ms Cleeland has formally requested data from the Minister for Roads on the number of accidents at the intersection in recent years.
“With Avenel’s population and traffic steadily increasing, we need to make sure our infrastructure is keeping up,” Ms Cleeland said.
“This intersection and the station precinct are vital parts of the town’s future, and we can’t afford to keep kicking the can down the road.”
Ms Cleeland acknowledged the strong community backing behind the push, particularly from local group Avenel Active.
“I’m grateful to Avenel Active for their tireless advocacy,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Once the land is transferred, I look forward to working with Strathbogie Shire Council to deliver the upgrades this town deserves.”
