Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has visited Colbinabbin Primary School to talk to students about her role as a Member of Parliament.
Ms Cleeland was joined by her Nationals colleague, Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell, as the two spoke with classes about the differences in responsibilities for politicians at a state and federal level.
“Getting to join primary school classes around the electorate is always a highlight for me,” Ms Cleeland said.
“We were able to explain what being an MP is like, what responsibilities we have, and what we are trying to do for our local communities.
“It’s an opportunity to talk with kids about what they find important, how they view leadership, and just to have some fun.
“We conducted a mock election to show how preferential voting works, using some well-known names like Taylor Swift, Batman, and Dustin Martin to get the kids involved.
“The Colbinabbin children were such a joy and had so many great questions about our political system, my family, and our local electorate needs.”
The children also presented as the deputy for “Member for Colbinabbin” raising local issues regarding pedestrian safety, agricultural market prices and poor conditions of the roads were some of the topics addressed.
Ms Cleeland has visited schools right across the electorate to attend civics classes and share her insights into politics, and has previously met with the Colbinabbin Primary School and local families to discuss improving the safety conditions surrounding the school.
“The Colbinabbin community has been campaigning on this issue for over a decade now,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Local residents have made it very clear to me – this crossing is not safe for their children.
“They have told me of several near misses between the children and the heavy traffic and are rightfully concerned.
“I have raised this with the Minister and will be continuing to advocate for better safety measures for our local children.”
