Crucial funds raised at the Mother’s Day Classic in Seymour

The Nationals’ Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, joined hundreds of locals in Seymour on Sunday for the Mother’s Day Classic – a national fundraiser supporting vital research into breast and ovarian cancer.

Now in its third year in Seymour, the event drew a record 320 participants, up from 180 the year before, raising nearly $20,000 to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

“We walked for the women we’ve lost, for those still fighting, and for those yet to be diagnosed,” Ms Cleeland said.

“It was a powerful, emotional and inspiring show of community spirit and support for women and families affected by these devastating diseases.”

While advances in breast cancer research have lifted the five-year survival rate from 84% to 92%, ovarian cancer remains one of the deadliest – with no early detection test, limited treatment options, and a five-year survival rate of just 49%.

“That’s why events like the Mother’s Day Classic are so critical,” Ms Cleeland said.

“They raise awareness, drive funding for life-saving research, and show those affected that they are not alone.”

Local organisers Adele Deverell and Rhiannon Dihm were praised for their tireless efforts in making the Seymour event such a success.

“It’s an emotional day for us,” Ms Deverell said.

“We just give it everything we’ve got to make it a really positive day and to raise much needed money for breast and ovarian cancer research.”

The event was supported by a strong volunteer network, including nine Mother’s Day volunteers, a volunteer first aid and medical response team, and the Mitchell Shire Council band, all of whom donated their time and expertise.

Rotary fired up the BBQ, and refreshments were made possible with the support of local businesses and volunteers.

“Volunteerism is the heartbeat of our region,” Ms Cleeland said.

“What we saw in Seymour on Sunday is a testament to what can be achieved when passionate, generous people come together for a cause bigger than themselves.

“The success of the Mother’s Day Classic in Seymour shows what’s possible when community leads the way.”
