Deadline extended for Bushfire Inquiry: Communities urged to speak out

The deadline for submissions to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Victoria’s 2026 summer bushfires has been extended to Sunday 19 April 2026, giving fire-affected communities more time to share their experiences and recommendations.

Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland MP, said the extension would ensure those directly impacted by the fires have the opportunity to be heard.

“This summer has been one of the hardest our region’s firefighters have faced. From Goomalibee to Longwood and into the Strathbogie hills, families, farmers and volunteers have lived through devastating bushfires that have left a deep mark on our communities,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Our firefighters were tested in ways we have not seen in recent years. Despite their extraordinary efforts, a number of challenges were exposed, including ageing equipment, communications issues, pressure on volunteers and difficulties with infrastructure such as quick fill sites.”

Ms Cleeland said the inquiry was an important opportunity to turn the lessons of the fire season into improvements for the future.

“Now is the time to document what we experienced and turn those lessons into recommendations that strengthen how we prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters,” she said.

“For change to occur, people need to speak up. The lived experience of our firefighters, farmers, landowners and local communities is incredibly important.”

The inquiry will examine preparedness and planning, the causes and circumstances of the fires, resourcing of fire agencies, volunteer support, emergency response, infrastructure resilience, recovery efforts and environmental impacts.

Ms Cleeland encouraged anyone with experience of the fires to consider making a submission.

“As a country community we know bushfires will always be a risk. That is why it is so important we learn from every season and continue improving the systems that protect our communities,” she said.

“If you saw challenges on the fireground, if recovery has been difficult, or if you have ideas about how we can better support our volunteers and improve fuel reduction and preparedness, I encourage you to make a submission.”

Ms Cleeland said her office could also assist residents who may need help preparing their submission.

“If you would like to make a submission but feel unsure about the process, please contact my office. My team can assist you in putting your experience into a submission for this important inquiry.”
