Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has called for the Labor Government to stand by its election commitments and ensure Broadford Primary School receives the $13.7 million it was promised for its redevelopment.
Speaking in Parliament during the week, Ms Cleeland said it was imperative that local schools like Broadford were still supported after recent news indicated that 89 of Labor’s school upgrade election commitments were now in doubt.
“Parents, students, and staff have all grown concerned about the school’s redevelopment,” Ms Cleeland said.
“When the commitment was announced, Labor representatives said Broadford Primary School’s funding would be ‘life changing’ for these students.
“Sadly, this life changing promise is no longer important to the Labor Government – who instead will continue to blow hundreds of millions on unnecessary projects.
“Failing to uphold this commitment jeopardises the academic success of the local children, while also undermining their overall well-being and future opportunities.
“This is a direct consequence of Labor’s financial mismanagement, and our local students and education system are paying the price.”
President of the school council, and local parent, Trent Saunders said the community cannot let this slip away.
“The school is deteriorating quickly as maintenance has stopped in anticipation of a redevelopment that is now set to be scrapped,” Mr Saunders said.
“Broadford is a rapidly growing town, both in terms of development and population, and it is only fair that our schools can match this growth.”
The news comes as Victoria’s net debt is projected to reach a record $177.6 billion by mid-2027, with Treasurer Tim Pallas warning of a “very, very tight” upcoming State Budget while flagging cuts to health and education expenditure.
