Power Restoration Underway Following Longwood Bushfires

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland says restoring electricity and essential services following the Longwood bushfires is a deeply complex and challenging task, with progress constrained by safety risks across the fire-affected area.

Ms Cleeland said she had met directly with AusNet as communities wait for clarity on when power can safely be restored.

“I have met directly with AusNet to talk through the next stages of power restoration,” Ms Cleeland said. “People have lost so much already, and waiting for basic services only adds to the strain. I will continue pushing for progress and clear communication every step of the way.”

Ms Cleeland said AusNet had commenced preliminary assessments, with aerial inspections now underway to assess damage across the fire-affected area.

“These aerial inspections are already taking place, and I was able to join crews to see firsthand the extent of damage to power infrastructure and affected homes,” Ms Cleeland said. “That visibility is critical to understanding the scale of the impact and determining the safest and most effective way forward.”

Ms Cleeland said road access remained one of the biggest barriers to restoring power.

“Crews cannot safely get in to begin repairs until roads are stable and access is restored,” she said. “As hard as it is for people waiting in the dark, power restoration is directly tied to when and where roads can be safely reopened.”

She said AusNet was exploring temporary solutions where possible.

“Where homes are still standing and conditions allow, AusNet is looking at options such as generators to restore temporary power,” Ms Cleeland said. “Every option is being considered, but safety has to come first.”

Ms Cleeland urged residents using generators or solar systems to strictly follow safety advice.

“AusNet has been very clear that anyone running private generators or solar must disconnect from the grid,” she said. “This is critical to protect line workers who are trying to do their job safely in incredibly dangerous conditions.”

She said restoring telecommunications was also a priority.

“I am working to explore options to restore phone and internet services, including temporary satellite services and mobile infrastructure where feasible,” Ms Cleeland said. “Connectivity is essential for safety, recovery and people staying connected to support.”

Ms Cleeland said she would continue working alongside service providers and authorities to ensure restoration is progressed safely, transparently and as quickly as conditions permit.
